I was reading a R&T issue and they referenced brand x and when they did all I could think of is how much I hate talking to people from that company.
Anyone else struggle with this?

Mixing hobbies and work is always hard. I hated working on my bikes (mountain bikes) when I was working at a shop.

That’s why I’m going to work in aerospace and not automotive. While I love aerospace and respect the field, I have a passion for automotive, and that passion is precious. I’d never mix it with my work.

I work in the motorcycle industry and have yet to succumb to this. Like all industry’s there are just people/companies that are a PITA to deal with. So you try and take the good with the bad, and hope the good wins. I’m still enjoying my time but I do spend most of it doing super technical stuff around the industry.

Kind of the same but when people want to talk about real estate. I do that shit all day. I don’t want to spend the weekend talking to you about what you think your house is worth because you discovered Zillow.

I like rock climbing and then I started climbing cell towers as a job. I no longer enjoy rock climbing. Hobbies/passions and careers are hard to mix successfully. Whenever I see a car on craigslist that says mechanic owned, I stay far from it.

I’ve found that assholes aren’t really brand-specific. At least not at the dealer level.

As a professional musician, I can tell you that, generally, I’m tired of the music business. At least classical music. I never listen to it unless I’m playing it.

I find the more I deal with people the less I want to deal with people.

Let’s say I now hate more companies than I like. It’s not so much I hate the brands, just when I see their name I think of who works there. “Fucking Tim works there. Fuck that guy.”

Never do what you love. Instead make a lot of money and then enjoy your hobbies carefree...
It can be a grind to mix work and hobbies. You’ll hate one or the other after a time.

I believe it was Mark Twain that said “The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.”

besides 2 young new helper techs, nobody at any of my 4 brands here at my dealer are car enthusiasts. We work on cars (high end/exotic) and could care less about enthusiasts stuff. Just work and go home. I am pretty much 95% not a car enthusiast

When I got in to IT I was very opinionated about the best brands of different hardware. Now that I’ve been doing this for a living for so many years I think they’re all just varying levels of crap. Which ones are the bottom rung seems to be a cycle. One year it’s Brand X, a while later it’s Brand Y.

No, actually, no Tims. I picked Tim out of the very minute chance someone recognizes a name of someone I hate. I don’t hate any Tims.

Yes, but that is more the people from that company. Hyundai as a company is just fucking terrible to work with. Literally everything is hard and their cars are meh.

Yes.
I like what Ford is doing vehicle wise, but after dealing with them for the last 15 years, I bought a Dodge. Two now in fact. Kia were one of the worst behaved, but seemed to be doing it for the right reasons. Chrysler were like The Dude, always good, even when cross. GM is like a train wreck that thinks everything is GREAT. Mazda is pretty cool. Hyundai made me fly to a 2 hour meeting that was in Korean. Guess what language I don’t speak. I could go on, but legally I can’t. Let me just summarize by saying, if a Ford was on fire I wouldn’t cross the street to piss on it. I would get a jerry can full of gas and chuck it at the pyre. And fuck the ashes.
Twice....

Before I started selling cars I was way into them, now I’m just like “ fucking cars” I only get exited about enthusiast cars, cool old stuff, oddball stuff...new cars are all the same shit, don’t care what emblem is on it, consumer cars are all shit.

I used to volunteer at a supercar only Cars and Coffee. None of the hypercars titilate my senses any more, and I have found nirvana in the simplicity of the MP4-12C. That ruined cars for me.
Bike shop: even though ______ made a new bike that uses an patent expired suspension design, the welds are still shit.
If you decide to argue with ______(bike company) about the tolerances of your frame and how small the tolerances are on your _____ (boutique hipster bike company), your warranty requests will get a lot more complicated (sending bike to ______(bike company) and waiting for them to send it back versus them just sending you the frame and you smashing the frame to bits)

Kind of like, if you love McDonald’s, don’t work there. Nothing wrong with McDonald’s but you will be around it too much and you lose your love.

so semi on topic. Apparently I say the phrase “So I’ve been doing the numbers...” so often my wife busts up laughing everytime I do. Its a lot. ITs probably funny to her because “the numbers” are usually something stupid like the Watt/hrs of a boiling hot nalgeen bottle (25, btw)

But what is an enthusiast anyway? Is it the guy who leases a 3-series and gushes over Ferrari posters? Or is it the guy who photographs rusty Datsun 620s?

I always say “looking at our finances,” or “assessing our goals.” Which is better than me saying “stop buying shoes all the time,” or “I bought a car because I wanted to."

Well I’ll be aiming for another house first, so I think I’ll just have this Celica for a while. I have some pretty good vehicle plans for when I get a bigger garage.

It’s why I don’t detail as a job. I enjoy it too much.

I just wish I could fit a car in my garage.

That’s pretty common. Me, I like the kids. The adults, however, can be a real pain in my ass.

You will deal with people like that in most professions, especially if you do any work with vendors/suppliers. At least you get to deal with car related things at work, you could be dealing with roofing materials or gate openers.

Yeah. In hindsight I may have made a mistake turning my hobby into a profession. However, on the flipside, I’m pretty darn adequate at what I do and make a pretty darn adequate living, and best of all have pretty darn great job security.

So you would reccomend, say, not going to work at a major automobile manufacturer in marketing or sales?
.....
What the hell am I supposed to do then?
![]() 04/12/2016 at 23:00 |

I can’t speak towards marketing or sales, you might love that.

I hope so. graduate with my bachelors this month. Hoping to go on to my masters and I can’t honestly think of a place that would better suited, except maybe real estate. Heard selling condos is pretty nice lol
Guess that old addage of not mixing business and pleasure is a little bit broader than is usually implied eh?
I’m still going to give it a shot. Gotta live the dream. I appreciate the heads up though.

I had a friend in high school whose father always impressed upon me some great advice. No idea why he was so friendly to me, maybe he was to everyone, but we were from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Nevertheless, one thing he told me that I'll do my best to recall is “never let your recreation become your vocation.” Basically you'll kill your hobbies if you try to do them for a living. I am certain plenty of people have found a nice balance, but it's worth considering as you plot the course of your life.

Personally I don’t think it would be a permanent thing even if you did end up hating it. I think if I didn’t interact with these people everyday it wouldn’t bug me as much.
